The toms, snare drum, and bass drums have 7-ply, 100% North American Birch Shells. The toms (12" x 8" tom-tom and 16" x 15" floor tom) have 1.6mm hoops, double 45 degree bearing edges, a Remo UT Pinstripe top head and a Remo UT Clear Ambassador bottom head. The 14" x 6" snare drum has 2.3mm Reverse Flange Snare Hoops and Brass Snare Wires. The 22" x 20" bass drum has Remo UT Powerstroke 3 bass drum heads.

The most distinctive feature of the Black Panther Retrosonic shell pack is the wood: hand-selected walnut is used with a walnut burl veneer finish to give the drum a dark, sultry look and a sound characteristic of the drums from the 1940's and 50's. The column lugs are made from hand-tooled stainless steel, and the 1:9 bearing edge allows the heads to vibrate as much as possible. Sonic Saver Hoops are also included- riding somewhere between a die cast hoop and a triple-flanged hoop; they provide the stability to give the drum very powerful rim shots, but are light enough to not hinder the vibrations of the shell. The rounded profile of the rims also extends the life of your sticks.

Each drum has a shell made from inner plies of walnut and exterior plies of birch (the standard Saturn shells have walnut/maple shells); made to be extra thin at 7.1mm (7.8mm for the bass drum), these wood-combination shells provide the body and fullness of walnut with the brightness and punch of birch. To further enhance the full resonance of each shell, Mapex's Isolated Mounting System has been implemented on all tom mounts - standard tom mounts are drilled and screwed into the shell of the drum, muting part of its natural resonance. Low mass lugs touch as little of the drum as possible, and only at one point, for similar reasons.

Spring-loaded floor tom legs are a cool little feature - you can set the height of the drum while the feet are still on the ground, slowly lifting and letting the legs extend themselves. 2.3mm Power Hoops, Remo Emperor Clear Batter heads, and Remo P3 Batter Bass Drum heads are also included.
