This book of twenty etudes is designed for a comprehensive keyboard percussion pedagogy program. Each etude is written on a grand staff and can be performed on a 4.3-octave marimba. The goals of the book are:

• To improve reading skills using a grand staff
• To provide short musical pieces for learning basic musical concepts
• To address techniques that must be mastered by any keyboard percussion player

Target tempos for performance are provided with each etude. These are simply goals for the student, and most of the etudes will require much slower practice in the beginning. Stickings have not been included, but the student is encouraged to develop stickings that facilitate a smooth, flowing technique and the correct articulation. The pieces are in a general progressive order but may be learned in any order that works best for the student.

Originally three different books, Step to Step: Collected Solos for the Developing Percussionist is a combination of Jon Metzger's Five Easy Pieces for Two-Mallet Marimba, Five Pieces for Timpani, and Five Pieces for Vibraphone. This book was written to help 3rd or 4th year percussionists work on multiple aspects of percussion that can easily get overlooked later in the learning process. Jon Metzer's writing style invokes a little jazz, a little modality, and a lot of fun. The sheet music gives the student an idea of what notes are going to show up in the piece. Instruments you will need:

• 4.3 Octave Marimba
• 2 to 4 Timpani
• Vibraphone

From the composer: My previous 'Step-to-Step' collections for tonal percussion instruments (including marimba, timpani, and vibraphone), are now combined into this one volume, Step-to-Step: Collected Solos for the Developing Percussionist. All of the solos in each area graduate sequentially from the easiest to the most difficult as each new piece adds new technical and musical challenges. Unlike transcriptions, the mallet pieces are written for each instrument (4.3-octave marimba or 3-octave vibraphone), and lay well naturally on the instrument. All of the pieces are ideal for technical and musical growth and lend themselves to end-of-term performances, recitals, juries and contests.

The Five Easy Two-Mallet Pieces for Marimba are based entirely on modes or scales common in jazz performance. The given scale is shown spelled on the staff to help develop a connection with a mental 'stamp' or 'image' of the scale shape on the page. Performers are also invited to improvise melodic fragments derived from each scale to help further develop a mental stamp of each scale in both their mind’s eye and on the marimba keyboard. Notes not part of the scale shape on the page or on the keyboard become 'avoid' notes. Easy piano 'vamps' are provided for supporting student improvisations. Please note that these vamps are not meant to accompany the notated solos, but rather student improvisation. The overall results are a stronger knowledge of the keyboard, improved accuracy on the instrument, and better reading fluency.

The Five Pieces for Timpani call upon preparatory singing exercises notated at the top of each page for internalizing the tuning challenges for each composition. While improving listening and pitch-matching skills through this process, the pieces also graduate from two-drum compositions to three- and four-drum selections.

The Five Pieces for Vibraphone focus on gaining control of the instrument’s ringing bars for clarity of the various musical lines contained in each composition. This is accomplished first through two-mallet long and short tones (with and without the pedal), then with pedaling that corresponds to meter. Next, the pieces include dead strokes as a technical precursor to subsequent stick dampening, and finally culminate in a four-mallet composition that combines all previous dampening techniques.

A collection of nine easy to intermediate marimba etudes, Suite Pepper would work well for any student just learning how to hold four mallets. Each etude, cleverly named after a pepper from different parts of the world, focuses on one stroke type - double verticals, single independents, single alternatings, double laterals, triple laterals, and one-handed rolls. The etudes also focus on particular intervals, so the student can spend time developing muscle memory. All of these etudes are nice on the ears and will entertain the student, which will in turn make them want to practice - a win for everybody!

From the composer: Suite Pepper is dedicated to Lisa Rogers and my dear friend, Mike Perez. Over a decade ago, Perez suggested I write a series of marimba solos for students that would be accessible to the ear and enjoyable to play. Inspired by that charge and by my study of marimba pedagogy with Lisa Rogers, I decided to compose this collection. It is meant to serve as a musical companion to an article that I wrote on four-mallet marimba pedagogy for School Band and Orchestra magazine (November 2007). Although a number of good student works for four-mallet marimba have been written in recent years, these pieces are unique in that they address only one motion, or stroke type at a time. As a percussion educator, I felt the need for a collection of this nature to enhance my students’ technical advancement in an enjoyable and musical way. The range required for the performance of these pieces is only that of a 4-octave marimba, which allows most every student percussionist with access to a marimba the opportunity to play them.

While composing the pieces for this book, I read an article in the Smithsonian about various peppers from around the world. Since a couple of the solos I had already written for this collection were 'south of the borde'’ in style, I thought it might be fun to name each piece after a particular type of pepper. Thus, the idea for Suite Pepper was planted. Many peppers grow well in Latin America, so some of these pieces are infused with a Latin American flavor. 'Scotch Bonnet' is a somber chorale that invokes a European tradition, although the actual pepper grows in the Caribbean. The naga jolokia pepper is from India, thus, 'Naga Jolokia' utilizes a drone and odd time signatures. The final solo is based on a ground bass motif so I couldn’t resist 'Ground Pepper.'
