In 2012, Zildjian modified their popular K Constantinople line of cymbals by adding 15" and 17" crashes as well as a 19" crash/ride cymbal. Along with rounding out their size options, Zildjian also incorporated a new hammering technique, used a new pin lathe on the top and bottom, and used a vintage-style cup on the crash cymbals. These features give the cymbal more overtones and nuance while maintaining the overall dark quality that the Constantinoples are known for.
K Constantinople cymbals speak with the dark, warm sounds associated with cymbals made in Turkey during the first half of the 20th Century. Known as "Old K's", these cymbals first resurfaced during the 1950s and 1960s with bebop-era vanguard drummers like Elvin Jones. They are hand-lathed by skilled artisans in the old way; pits and other surface impurities are retained, preserving the original tonal quality that is normally lost with lathing and polishing.
The 16" K Constantinople Crash is crafted with some new techniques - incorporating the same features as the new 15", 17", and 19" K Constantinople Crashes, this cymbal now utilizes new hammering techniques causing it to open up with more dark overtones, distinction, and musicality than ever before. A pin lathe, added to the top and bottom, serves as an additional tonal groove that adds to the overall complexity of the sound produced. Additionally, the new pin lathe enhances the visual appearance of the cymbal, creating a vintage look reminiscent of the K's of the past. This cymbal is thin in weight.
