The brass shell will give the drum a good low end sound, and will also cut through a lot of sound.

    • I've owned this drum for over 2 years and I love it. It has the same standard single-beaded Black Nickel plated Brass shell that made the Black Beauty famous. But, manufactured in Taiwan to keep the costs down so that most of us can enjoy that studio sound that engineers have loved for decades. Jeff Porcaro, Lars Ulrich, Steve Ferrone, and Chad Smith all used Black Beauties on their most popular recordings. The snare is very responsive and doesn't miss ghost notes or rolls, but can also bite through chunky guitars and bass without a problem when tuned up. Very versatile drum for all forms of Rock, Pop, Country and even Hip-Hop/R&B. I would replace the stock Taiwanese heads with U.S. heads right out of the box. I use a 2ply head on the batter side and it does a perfect job of dampening the overtones just enough that I do not need any extra muffling. With the style of music I've been playing, the Big Black has performed flawless in the studio and onstage. I actually used this snare over a Fibes Fiberglass, a DW Maple, and a Yamaha Recording snare in the studio. The only issue, and I mean ONLY ISSUE, I've had were the tuning rods around the Rimshot area loosening over the course of a show (Top and Bottom Rods). I've also read similar issues with DW, Tama, and Gretsch snares from players that really lay into the groove with Rimshots. A single drop of Loctite will solve this issue.

    • This drum is awesome. I just bought one. It is one of the most sensitive snares I have ever played. It has great range and tone. Three brass shell is very nice... WORTH EVERY PIGGY PENNY
