Nagoya Marimbas by Steve Reich has quickly risen the ranks of the percussion repertoire to become an absolute staple. Written in Reich's definitive minimalist style, this duet for two advanced marimbists shifts tonal characteristics frequently enough to keep any audience happy.

Reich uses a compositional technique of moving one player one or more beats (or parts of a beat) in front of the other, creating a solid 16th-note canon that is reminiscent of a delay effect. The patterns and melody shift quickly to keep things from getting stale.

The difficulty in this kind of music is rarely technical - each player only needs two mallets and the 'licks' aren't individually hard - but reading and/or memorizing the piece is a beast of a challenge for any musician. It can be excruciatingly difficult to recover if you get lost.

    Instrumentation: Two Marimbas

    Difficulty: Advanced

Duration: 4:45 - 5:30 (depending on how many times patterns are repeated)

From the composer: - Nagoya Marimbas is somewhat similar to my pieces from the 1960s and '70s in that there are repeating patterns played on both marimbas, one or more beats out of phase, creating a series of two part unison canons. However, these patterns are more melodically developed, change frequently and each is usually repeated no more than three times, similar to my more recent work. The piece is also considerably more difficult to play than my earlier ones and requires two virtuosic performers. - Steve Reich
