Robert Jager's Concerto for Percussion and Band is a piece written as one large movement that features a soloist playing a slew of percussion instruments against the backdrop of an ensemble - in this particular case, the band's parts have been reduced so a single pianist can play it.

The instrument list for this piece is significant, which makes it very entertaining for the audience. If you perform this concerto you'll need:

    • Bells, Xylophone, Vibraphone
    • Timpani (4), Toms (4), Snare Drum, Bass Drum
    • Temple Blocks, Suspended Cymbal, Tam-Tam

Performance Notes: The overall form of the composition is binary with each large section having its own sub-form. The first is that of an introduction and arch principle, and the second is that of an introduction and rondo. All of the melodic material is taken from the first statement by the timpani, while all of the harmonic material is derived from the opening chords in the band. While the moods change throughout the composition, the integrity of this material is maintained.

Rather than solely exploring the timbre possibilities of the percussion family, a more melodic approach was utilized. In this way a "sound for sound's sake" was avoided, which allowed for greater development of materials in the percussion rather than in the band alone. This integration of resources is at the heart of the composition and is the key to its unity.
