  • Item Details

Power Struggle by Nathan Daughtrey is written for 8 percussionists, but it's really a battle between 4 keyboard players and 4 drummers.

Written for a talented high school group, this high-energy piece could work just as well on a college percussion ensemble concert. It would make for an eye-opening opener, or perhaps a strong finish for the first half!

    Difficulty: Medium

    Duration: 4:45

    Instrumentation:

    • Player 1: Bells, Xylophone
    • Player 2: Vibraphone
    • Player 3: 4.3-Octave Marimba (shared)
    • Player 4: 4.3-Octave Marimba (shared)
    • Player 5: Timpani (4)
    • Player 6: Concert Toms (4), Snare Drum, Chimes
    • Player 7: Splash Cymbal, Suspended Cymbal, Hi Hats, China Cymbal, Shaker
    • Player 8: Splash Cymbal, Suspended Cymbal, Hi Hats, China Cymbal, Shaker

From the composer: Dedicated to the Lincoln-Way Central High School Percussion Ensemble (Eric Wellman, director), Power Struggle features a balanced ensemble of 4 keyboard percussion and 4 battery percussion. The struggle is apparent from the opening bars of the piece, with the 2 halves of the ensemble competing for attention in an exhilarating and bombastic fashion. The struggle subsides briefly as the keyboards present a new melody and the battery provides a quietly grooving backdrop. The two opposing sections of the ensemble continue this struggle, inwardly and outwardly, until the end of the piece. - Nathan Daughtrey
