Mixtures by David J. Long is not about your favorite cocktail. It's actually about the three sources of sound: wood, membrane and metal. Each of these sounds has their own personality and unique quality, and it's expressed by multiple players in various forms.

Performers have some freedom through out the piece with choosing the sources of which the sound come from and when they happen. All the sounds are featured on their own, and then they're mixed in (hence the name of the piece!).

This piece would be wonderful for a college-aged group or advanced high school line for a percussion performance.

    Difficulty: Medium +

    Duration: 6:00

    • Percussion 1: Vibraphone, Bongos, Conga and Marimba
    • Percussion 2: Graded Suspended Cymbals (4), Roto-Toms (4), Chimes, Marimba, Maracas and Gong
    • Percussion 3: Small Suspended Cymbal, Graded Cans (5), Temple Blocks, Snare Drum, Vibraphone and Xylophone
    • Percussion 4: Chocallo, Triangle, Graded Concert Toms (5), Maraca and Slapstick
    • Percussion 5: Gong, Graded Brake Drums (5), Timpani (4), Wood Blocks (2) and Castanets

From the composer: Mixtures uses three main categories of sound sources: metal, membrane, and wood. After each is heard separately, the sources are mixed (some by performer choice) in a partially aleatoric section which is followed by an imitative section that includes all three sources.

    • Here’s where your summary shows up. You can talk about things you like about it, things you don’t, what your expectations were, what you had heard from other people, or whatever you’d like! Hitting the return button after a sentence a couple of times will move your text down to the next line like this, so you can make paragraphs that are easier for people to read.
