  • Item Details

Rauk by Anders Astrand derives it's name from the tall limestone formations found in Sweden and is written for solo vibraphone and percussion trio. Within the trio, each performer has a similar setup that is then slightly differentiated by pitch.

Player one has the highest pitched instruments, player two plays medium pitch, and player three plays the lowest pitched instruments in the trio. This creates an interesting texture difference even while the trio is playing unison figures.

For a large portion of this piece the trio is playing rhythmically complicated and technically challenging passages that are completely unison, which displays the utmost level of precision within the ensemble. The soloist is the most important aspect of this piece, first by offering a much more lyrical and legato timbre to the mix but also because of the large amount of improvisation over the accompanying trio. This requires a very experienced and skilled soloist who wants to showcase their creativity and knowledge of modal theory.

This piece is no walk in the park, but will a great deal of fun for any four mature college-level performers.

    • Vibraphone, Two Marimbas (at least one must be a 5-octave)

Notes from the Composer: "In 1999, Amore Grup de Percussio in Valencia, Spain, commissioned me to compose a piece for solo vibraphone and three percussionists. I performed the piece on vibraphone with the group later that year. The piece is named after the tall limestone formations in Gotland, Sweden called Rauk. Solo part contains large sections of improvisation.
