  • Item Details

The Dance of Wind by Robert McClure is a seven section percussion ensemble for eight players. Each section takes the performers and audience to a completely new style, these styles include funk, Afro-Cuban 12/8, grooves in 5/4, minimalism, a slow chorale, and a canon.

This does a great job of constant keeping the players on their toes as they have to switch between all of these contrasting ideas as well as keeping the audiences attention by not sitting on one idea for a long time.

This piece has a large focus in ostinatos, with performers playing lost of repeated passages that are then broken up by the style changes in order to avoid any monotony. This changes happen very quickly and often without any warning to the players or the audience member.

The Dance of Wind requires the utmost level of focus from all of the performers in order to make it through all of the repetitiveness without losing their way. This is a great piece for any college ensemble concert.

Notes from the Composer: "This piece is composed in seven sections. Each section portrays a different mood and atmosphere. These sections represent the change that the wind or a simple breeze will take in the course of minutes and how this change affects everything in its path. The Dance of Wind was premiered by the BGSU Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Roger Schupp on April 18, 2006 in Kobacker Hall.
