The Passenger is what would be considered a programmatic work for eleven percussionists and piano. This work tells the story of a man going on an adventure by train through the use of different specifically grouped instruments to produce interesting sound effects such as a gliss on bells and timpani imitating the sound of a train.

The Passenger keeps a steady tempo throughout the entire work and stays in 4/4 with the exception of three 2/8 measures that are used to signify a change in mood. As the piece goes seamlessly from one musical idea, you can still find the main melodic theme tucked away somewhere within the texture. This ensemble is very tonal and is a great fit for any college level ensemble.

Notes from the composer: "The Passenger tells the story of a man who leaves town for an experience away from the ordinary. The vessel of transportation is a train, indicated by the glissandi in the bells, timpani, and the melodic ostinato found in the marimbas. Follow the many motives as they move the piece forward toward an adventure with the passenger. A few of the unique sounds in The Passenger include four-note glissandi in the bells interacting with glissandi on a single timpano. The percussion parts are all concert versions of instruments found in a standard drum set. The piano blends equally with the rest of the ensemble, sharing both melodic and accompaniment responsibilities."
