  • Item Details

The Surface of Life by Mark Ford combines sounds and techniques from all over the world, including the Middle East, Korea, Trinidad, Cuba, and western music. Within the multiple layers of interesting grooves and timbres there is a more prominent solo vibraphone part that will require a top-notch performer.

This is an incredibly interesting piece due to the fusion of so many great instruments that we might not typically expect to be grouped together. With an advanced college-level group, this piece will be a hit at any percussion concert.

    Instrumentation: 5-Octave Marimba, Xylophone, Almglocken

  • Double Second Steel Pans, Cello Steel Pans, Crotales
  • String Bass, Kick Drum, Toms (4)
  • Korean Gong, Splash Cymbal, China Cymbal, Sizzle Cymbal
  • Suspended Cymbal, Wind Chimes (Mark Tree), Tambourine
  • Headless Tambourine, Vibraslap, Tom, Finger Cymbals
  • Doumbek, High & Low Cajons, Earth Bells

Duration: 3:00

Notes from the Composer: "The Surface of Life was the third prize recipient in the 2008 Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest and is dedicated to University of North Texas percussion professor Christopher Deane. Professor Deane has personally expanded the potential of the concert vibraphone through his compositions such as Morning Dove Sonnet and The Apocryphal Still Life. He is also a wonderful tambourine player. The solo part in The Surface of Life reflects these gifts. The music combines cultural and musical aspects of the Middle East, Korea, Trinidad, Cuba and western music as the vibraphone part is supported by two steel drum players (double seconds and cellos), cajon, doumbek, marimba, xylophone, gongs, string bass, and two percussionists. The grooves and timbres of Surface of Life create a wonderful platform to feature an advanced vibraphonist."
