...folded... by Brian Nozny is a complex work for solo marimba and keyboard quartet. The idea behind this piece is to look at like it is a sheet of paper and then fold the paper upon itself at random so that eventually the paper is layered over itself in a seemingly chaotic manner.

So while all of the edges are still perfectly straight and the paper is clean, everything is not shaped in a completely new way.

Nozny creates this idea by featuring complex hemiola rhythms between the soloist and quartet as well as straight linear figures that seem to be unmarred at all. This ensemble has a strong focus on sound and texture, thus, how all of the sounds layers together, rather than a focus on speed or volume.

This is an interesting piece that will require a very skilled soloist and four other performers that can maintain the foundation of the music.

    • Soloist: 5-Octave Marimba
    • Player 1: 5-Octave Marimba, Xylophone, Crotales, Mark Tree, Suspended Cymbal, Sizzle Cymbal
    • Player 2: 5-Octave Marimba, Bells
    • Player 3: 5-Octave Marimba, Vibraphone, Sizzle Cymbal
    • Player 4: Chimes, Finger Cymbals, Suspended Cymbal, Three Triangles, Mark Tree

Notes from the Composer: "...folded...can be looked at as a piece of loose leaf paper folded upon itself at random. Areas of the material - corners - lines - edges - are now layered on top of one another in what seems like chaos and disarray. And yet there is still an order to the chaos. All of the lines are straight, the material is still clean and unmarked, and if unfolded, the piece of paper is still complete, though now marred by its shaping. It was commissioned by James Campbell for the University of Kentucky Percussion Ensemble's 2007 PASIC Showcase Concert in Columbus, OH.
