Taking a cue from the most popular snare drum excerpts asked for in auditions - Kije, the Bartok, and Scheherazade movements III/IV - James Campbell's Symphonic Dances is a multi-movement snare solo that requires the same finesse and attention to detail as those classic works.

The original music is never quoted directly, but all of the original themes are fragmented and their 'feel' is used throughout each of the movements. The total duration of this piece is nine minutes, with each movement lasting about three. To successfully pull this piece off, you'll need fast single strokes, total dynamic control, and the ability to play crystal-clear rudiments.

This snare solo is for players at a medium+ or advanced level, and would work well on an undergraduate recital. This solo is most effective as a recital piece if your audience has some familiarity with the original material.

From the composer: The material for Three Symphonic Dances for Solo Snare Drum is derived from 3 orchestral snare drum excerpts that are among the most requested works placed on audition lists for percussion vacancies in professional orchestras. The first movement is based on "The Birth of Kije" from Prokofiev's Lt. Kije Suite; the second movement is based on "Giuoco Delle Coppie" from Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra; the third movement is from material in "Movement III" and "Movement IV" from Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade Symphonic Suite. Realizing that there are traditional and regional interpretations of the snare drum excerpts from these masterworks, performers should feel free to take stylistic liberties. - James Campbell
